Distractions
Distracted drivers cause car wrecks. Distractions include using a GPS, looking at a billboard, “rubbernecking” an accident, checking out the scenery or even looking at other cars surrounding you instead of those directly in your path and adjacent to you. THIS ALSO MEANS CELL PHONES.
It’s no secret drivers use their cell phones while operating their vehicles. From texting and talking, to listening to music and navigation, cell phones are commonly used while driving. Put your cell phone down.
Defensive Driving
Remain alert for disabled vehicles and debris. Anticipate your exits and congested traffic. You shouldn’t slam on your brakes or squeeze in between cars to make your exit. Watch your speed and obey traffic signals and warnings.
Most people don’t consider driving dangerous. But vehicles can weigh several tons, and some vehicles haul freight weighing 40 tons. Car wrecks can be deadly when reaching speeds of 55-70 miles per hour.
Vehicle Maintenance
It is important to have your vehicle inspected before a long trip. Your local mechanic can inspect your traffic signals, brake and tires, and perform oil changes. It is also important to wash your vehicle before a trip. Dirt and grime build up on your windows and can obstruct your view, especially in sunny or rainy conditions, so top off your wiper fluid. You don’t want to be in a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.
